Morning Hike

TA Day 29

Today was a short but full day marked by Kea and good friends. We’re in a small group of “NOBO” hikers right now — Justin and I have largely been hiking on our own but we’re in a bubble of other hikers heading north on Te Araroa. 90% of thru-hikers choose to hike the TA from north to south so we have crossed paths with hundreds of “SOBO” hikers over the last month but have met far fewer hikers heading north. It’s been fun getting to know some other folks out here though. We all stayed in Crooked Spur Hut tonight which proved to be a fun and unexpected experience, with about a dozen Kea (the world’s biggest mountain parrot?) taking residence on the roof for the whole night. Apparently they are notorious for eating peoples’ tents and hiking poles at this site.
