Showdown with Kayla Atkinson

Had a lot of fun in this "shorter" race. We made it to the race with my trusty 2007 Avalon, which needs new brakes and was missing a windshield wiper,  through snowy roads and a nice rain. Thankfully, the rain let up and we were left with some slushy and muddy trails. 

Kayla and I had done some training together and I am super stoked that she won her first ever trail race. I started out quick and tried to hang in second place. I  was passed within the first few miles and ended up in a lonely forth. I lost touch with third and became aware of a group of three chasing me which included Kayla. I kept trying to get away from the chase with the corners, but did not succeed. 

Over the last two miles, the group steadily started gaining on me as the lead started to build up in my legs. It was difficult biomechanically and aerobically. I took a month off of running recently and I felt that. I also have not pushed in Z3 and higher for this long in several years and was glad to have the day I did. I was terrified of getting hamstring cramps that have plagued me in the past and gratefully they stayed away. 

My watch distance was a bit off, so I had no real concept of where the finish was until I saw it. As the pack hunted me down, I went into the pain cave and focused on not letting anyone pass. Once the finish was in sight, I knew my sprinter's kick would carry me home. Honestly, I had no idea how close Kayla and I would be and it turns out 15 seconds was too close for comfort. So excited to see what she does in her mom/trail era because she is one incredible runner. 

Shoes: Wore the trusty speedcross for the grip, they have 400+ miles on them so I feel like I missed an opportunity for shoes with more energy return. But hey, I didn't fall!

Carbs: Had some issues with my flow bottle, but took in 190 g total for 90 g ish per hour, honestly good have done a tiny bit more

Water: 750 ml with 700 mg sodium, felt like the right amount on a cold day

Training: needed a bit more tome back from my month off and some more hill intervals. Proud of running the whole race, not having to pee, and fighting through the muddy hills at the end.
